SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Almost 140,000 Illinois residents will soon be receiving checks of between $50 and $100, as part of the state’s program to return money without owners filing a claim.

The Enhanced Money Match program from the Illinois Treasurer’s office crossmatches data collected by the state with the unclaimed property database. The money can include overlooked safety deposit boxes, unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and unused rebate cards.

Owners of the unclaimed property will receive a letter describing the amount and source of the money, followed by a check.

Treasurer Michael Freichs said almost $13.2 million will be returned.

“Returning this money to its rightful owners will help make life a little bit easier for people,” Frerichs said last week. “At a time when we are all dealing with higher prices, it can pay for a couple bags of groceries or maybe a fill-up or two at the pump.”
