ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A much-needed upgrade comes to Winnebago County Animal Services as they cut the ribbon on a new expansion.

The expansion includes three new dog rooms, an exam room and an intake area for pet owners. In total, 4,000 square feet were added to the shelter.

This is the only government-run animal shelter in Winnebago County and one of the leaders said this expansion was long overdue.

“It’s much needed. It’s a great service that Winnebago County provides for our entire county, to really watch these animals here when they’re in their care and try to get them a new home,” said Winnebago County Board Chairman Joseph Chiarelli. “But also making sure they do investigations on animal cruelty and other investigations that are needed, animal bites, and things like that.”

The shelter is responsible for the care of over 4,000 animals every year.
