ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — National Boss’s Day is celebrated on October 16th, to recognize the hardworking boss who oversees the workplace. But did you know the holiday originated in Illinois?

It’s true: in 1958, Patricia Bays Haroski worked for State Farm Insurance in Deerfield when she registered “National Boss’s Day” with the United States Chamber of Commerce in honor of her father’s birthday.

Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner backed her registration and officially proclaimed the day a holiday in 1962.

However, if October 16th falls on a weekend, then the day is celebrated on the closest working day.

Hallmark began issuing Boss’ Day cards in 1979.

So, how do you celebrate National Boss’s Day?

According to National Day Calendar , give your boss the day off! Or, host a potluck! Or, have everyone sign a card!

    There’s even a social media hashtag: #BossDay.
