(WTVO) — There are a lot of foods you should not feed a baby and honey is no exception.

Babies that are less than a year old because of a Clostridium. Clostridium is a type of bacteria that is commonly found in honey.

When a baby ingests Clostridium, it can lead to infant botulism, according to Kidshealth . Symptoms of infant botulism are muscle weakness, a weak cry, constipation and decreased muscle tone.

The best way to prevent a baby from contracting botulism is by not giving a baby any processed foods that contain honey. Honey graham crackers are just one example of a food containing honey that parents should avoid.

Light and dark corn syrups may also have bacteria that have clostridium, but the concern has not been proven.

Kidshealth suggests parents check with their doctor before giving corn syrup to a baby.

The good news is once children get older they develop a more mature digestive system that can handle the bacteria.
