(WTVO) — Walmart is recalling 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice due to high levels of arsenic across the U.S.

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expressed the immediate need to take the product off of shelves after their initial announcement on August 15th.

The FDA’s classification implies the juice may cause temporary negative health effects but probably will not to serious health problems.

“Apple juice can still be considered a safe beverage if consumed in moderation and if it meets regulatory standards for arsenic levels,” Darin Detwiler, associate teaching professor at Northeastern University and a food policy expert told Medical X Press . “However, I would advise consumers—especially children—to vary their diet and not rely solely on apple juice or other single-source beverages. Diversifying fluid intake with water and other safe beverages helps mitigate potential risks.”

Illinois is one of the 25 states that is experiencing the recall.

The other 24 are: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” said Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman. “We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate.”

The FDA has yet to report anyone becoming ill from consuming the recalled apple juice.
