Man in critical condition after aggravated assault, police searching for suspects
SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Deputies are investigating a shooting that left a 67-year-old man critically injured Wednesday morning.At approximately 6:30 a.m. on July 10, 2024, deputies responded to a shooting in the 20900 block of CR 4129 in northern Smith County. Upon arrival, they discovered Rogieys Simmons, 67, had been shot in the upper body while standing at the front door of his residence. According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, Simmons had been in an argument with two male suspects, one white and one black, just before the shooting. The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle down CR 4129.Simmons was transported to UT Health Tyler by UT Health EMS and is currently undergoing surgery in critical condition. Smith County Investigators and the Crime Scene Unit are on the scene conducting their investigation.The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage to contact the Smith County Sheriff's Office at (903) 566-6600. The identity of the 34-year-old victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, according to a statement from the Houston Police Department (HPD). Finlay reported that patrol officers responded to a shooting call at the address and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the roadway. Midland man sentenced to 20 years for fatal fentanyl trafficking
MIDLAND, Texas — A Midland man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his role in a fatal fentanyl trafficking conspiracy. William Jake Childers, 39, trafficked counterfeit M-30 Oxycodone pills containing fentanyl that led to the deaths of two West Texas men, according to court documents. In May 2022, Winkler County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an unattended death at a residence in Kermit. Autopsy results confirmed the cause of the male victim’s death to be acute fentanyl toxicity. An investigation confirmed that the victim and Childers had communicated about the sale of fentanyl pills.

Wanted man dies at hospital after police standoff and allegedly shooting at police
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A suspect was shot and killed by police after a standoff in the 400 block of Morningview Drive on July 9, 2024. Officers responded to a call for a wanted person, identified as 52-year-old Juan Antonio Hernandez, who had three active felony warrants for burglary habitation, domestic violence strangulation, and evading, according to San Antonio Police Chief McManus.
