Rapper DMX still on life support after suffering heart attack

(NEW YORK) Grammy-nominated rapper DMX was reported to be on life support Saturday evening following his hospital admission the previous night after suffering a heart attack.

According to NBC New York, DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was rushed from his home to a White Plains hospital in New York around 11 p.m. on Friday.

The rapper's attorney Murray Richman told NBC News he had to be resuscitated by medical personnel at the hospital's critical care unit.

Richman and a spokesperson for DMX confirmed that the rapper was on still life support after he misspoke earlier Saturday and said DMX had come off life support and was breathing on his own.

TMZ reported that DMX's heart attack was caused by a drug overdose.

DMX has shared his struggles with addiction in the past. In 2019, the rapper announced on Instagram that he checked himself into rehab again. The post read:

In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility. He apologizes for his cancelled shows and thanks his fans for their continued support.

The native New Yorker had reportedly been working on his new album. Last July, the 50-year-old made headlines with his Verzuz battle performance with Snoop Dogg.
