(ANTIOCH, Calif.) A man was shot by Antioch police officers during a mental health call early Friday morning, East Bay Times reports.

The shooting happened around 12:50 a.m. in the 200 block of W. 3rd Street after the man allegedly charged at the officers with a knife and the use of a stun gun failed to stop him.

The man was then promptly transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries. His condition was reported as stable.

Neither the man’s identity nor the identity of the officer who shot him have been released at this time.

The initial call reported that a 45-year-old family member was in the midst of a mental health crisis.

Officers encountered the man when he exited the kitchen of the residence holding a knife and told the officers that he wanted to die.

The officers asked him to drop the knife and backed away from him outside of the apartment. The man then went back inside the unit and closed the door.

The officers then “created time and distance by moving away from the apartment in accordance with their training,” according to a statement released by the department.

However, as they backed away, the man “suddenly exited the apartment and charged at them with the knife still in his hand.”

The officers again commanded the man to drop the knife with one officer attempting to subdue the man with a taser with no results, the other officer then fired twice, according to the statement.

The man went down on the landing outside the apartment and officers provided first aid until emergency responders were able to transport him to the hospital.

An investigation into the shooting is underway and includes the Antioch Police Department, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, according to the county’s Law Enforcement Involved Fatal Incident.
