(SAN JOSE, Calif.) Two San Jose officials are calling for a stricter policy on illegal dumping around the city.

According to NBC Bay Area, Councilmember Sergio Jimenez and Planning Commissioner Rolando Bonilla have introduced a proposal that would increase and restructure the city's illegal dumping fines to $10,000 per offense.

"Although we are in a pandemic, we will not allow anyone to turn our communities into dumping yards," Bonilla said in a statement. "It is clear to me that the City of San Jose must take a no-nonsense approach against those who seek to disrespect our communities with this behavior. San Jose residents deserve better."

Currently, the first offense starts with a $2,500 fine and only hits $10,000 for a third offense."

"When it comes to illegal dumping, there should not be a three strikes approach, as it sends the wrong message to those seeking to harm our communities," said Jimenez, according to NBC Bay Area.

Jimenez will introduce the ordinance during the Rules Committee meeting on April 28.
