California attorney general targets fake COVID-19 vaccine cards

(OAKLAND, Calif.) The attorney general of California has joined other officials who recently began combatting the online sale of fake COVID-19 vaccination cards, East Bay Times reports.

A letter was sent by the National Association of Attorneys General to OfferUp, a site similar to Craigslist regarding the recent sales of fake vaccine cards on the site.

“Allowing users of your platform to market and sell fake vaccine cards is a threat to residents of our states,” the letter reads. California Attorney General Matthew Rodriquez was one of the signatories of a letter.

Similar letters were sent to eBay and Twitter regarding the sales of fake vaccine cards 10 days earlier with the intent that sales of forfeit vaccine cards on their platforms would be blocked.

Administrators of OfferUp “actively remove” posts selling fake vaccine cards, according to a spokesperson from OfferUp.

To date, the letter has been signed by the attorney generals of 39 states. The District of Columbia, Guam and the Virgin Islands also signed the letter.

The states that are not represented in the letter are Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.

A similar statement was released last summer condemning the distribution of “mask exempt cards” that falsely claimed that employees or businesses asking the bearer of the card to wear a mask would be in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Rodriguez has held the office of attorney general in the state for one month. His predecessor, Xavier Becerra, is now the U.S. secretary of health and human services.
