    First North Carolina rip current-related death reported among 23 this summer, national report says

    NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WNCN) — The U.S. has seen almost two dozen rip current-related deaths so far this summer, and one of them happened in North Carolina, according to new data from the National Weather Service.

    The data says there have been 23 deaths related to rip currents so far this year in the U.S., and one of them was reported in Nags Head.

    According to the NWS, an 18-year-old man died after getting caught in a rip current in Nags Head on July 4.

    Rip current-related deaths were also reported in Florida, Puerto Rico, Texas, Ohio and Illinois.

    In 2023, the NWS reported 91 rip current-related deaths in total. That’s compared to a 10-year average of 74 per year.
