Ciryl Gane defeats Alexander Volkov in 5 round Heavyweight main event on UFC Fight Night
2021-06-28
This past Saturday, June 26th UFC Fight Night on ESPN + took place where we saw the Heavyweight 5 round main event between #3 ranked Ciryl Gane take on #5 heavyweight Alexander Volkov take place.
Cyril Gane who is still undefeated at 8-0 *now 9-0* had his last fight against fellow heavyweight contender Jairzinho Rozenstruik and won the fight by unanimous decision where Volkov came into this fight with a standing record of 33-8 with his last fight also being a win against MMA legend Alistair Overeem which Volkov had an incredible performance that ended with a knockout finish in the second round.
This fight between Gane and Volkov ended up going the distance of all 5 rounds and from what I saw there were many fans after the fight who labeled the fight boring or not entertaining.
All that showed me was that not many fans even watched the fight properly as I saw the fight as a very competitive back and forth match. More so a kickboxing match than an MMA bout as 99.8% of the bout took place on the feet.
A lot of casual MMA fans hate the grappling aspect of the sport and now we see two heavyweight stand and go shot for shot the fans still aren't happy because there was no incredible or devastating knockout.
Regardless, personally, I was entertained watching a dude the size of Cyril Gane move how he can, Being 6’4 and 240lbs this mans has an incredibly fast jab that we saw him utilize all fight popping Volkov with it. Gane isnt known as the 1 punch knockout guy and is more of a technical striker and I appreciate the crap out of seeing it in the heavyweight division.
I don't really need to do around for round breakdown and this will probably be one of my shortest videos as just about every round was more of the same where we saw Gane outstrike Volkov in 4 of the 5 rounds besides the 1st round where we saw Volkov outstrike Gane 25 to 16 but the majority of the strikes were leg kicks.
In round 2 we started to see Gane pick it up a bit and ended the round out striking Volkov 24 to 22 but had octagon control just about all round.

Round 3 was Gane's best round where he was much more aggressive than usual and he outstruck Volkov 42 to 23 and then again in the 4th round outstriking Volkov 29 to 21.
In the fifth and final round, the striking was dead even at 24 apiece but it was very clear the more impactful strikes came from the side of Ciryl Gane.
The fight ends and again it wasnt the most entertaining fight to some but someone like me loves to watch technical battles and this was one of those fights.
Going into the scorecards we had 2 judges give the fight to Gane with the score of 50-45 while one judge gave the fight to Gane 49-46 meaning he more than likely gave the first round to Volkov.

Going forward from this fight I would like to see Gane fight either Derrick Lewis, who is waiting to see what happens next for himself as the fight between him and heavyweight champion Francis Ngganou that was previously being discussed to take place in august is now off the table and negotiations are still ongoing.
If thats the case and Derrick wants to stay busy I say make the fight between him and Gane for the number one contender against Francis. Or if that doesnt happen I would like to see Gane take on my boy Curtis Blaydes if Curtis is able to get past Jairzinho in his next fight.
If Jairznho were to win that fight I honestly don't want to see him vs Gane again so soon after they just fought recently. As for Volkov id be cool with seeing him fight Jairzinho if he loses to Curtis.
