Kennedy Jr. on the state's presidential ballots. The complaint filed Thursday seeks to reverse the board's action that made "We The People" an official party in the presidential battleground state. Board staff last week said that supporters of We The People turned in enough valid signatures from registered and qualified voters to exceed the petition threshold in state law.In the complaint filed in Wake County Superior Court, lawyers representing the Democratic Party alleged that Kennedy's campaign evaded...
D.G. Martin: New book spotlights legacy of playwright Paul Green
Many North Carolinians know who Paul Green is or was, but most can’t tell you much about him. He was certainly North Carolina’s greatest modern playwright as many of us learned when our teachers told us about the outdoor drama, “The Lost Colony,” the story of attempted colonization of North Carolina by the British, including, of course, the birth of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the “new world.” ...

Fight fentanyl poisoning and learn at a local Race Against Drugs event
It has been reported that ten people in North Carolina die each day as a result of fentanyl poisoning and over 375 people in Davidson County have also died as a result since 2015. Recently Davidson County has been inundated with more deaths associated with fentanyl. It is saddening to hear the number of individuals that have lost their lives from fentanyl poisoning and the statistics are as shocking when the age range of those killed by fentanyl is exposed. Locally, there have been countless arrests made by law enforcement of persons selling the deadly drug within our own community. There have also been arrests made of parents and caretakers of children that are being poisoned after ingesting the drug, unaware. This dangerous drug effects everyone and has the potential of killing someone that each of us know and loves, if it hasn’t already. It is time to end the excuses that too many live by, that it is not our problem, because it now is.

'Twenty-one Boxes' recounts story of Little Rascals case
Betsy Hester’s story in her new book, “Twenty-one Boxes,” is complex and challenging to read. It is an account of the Little Rascals Day Care Center sexual abuse case in the late 1980s and early 1990s that rocked the Edenton community, riveted Americans across the country, and raised profound questions about American justice, the rule of law, and what justice should look like. The book’s title was inspired by the 21 boxes of evidence that are still stored in archives about the case. ...
NC Department of Transportation upgrades traffic signals to improve pedestrian safety
North Carolina Department of Transportation is improving pedestrian safety through upgrading traffic signals.According to a Friday press release, NCDOT is adding a 'leading pedestrian interval' or LPI, to its traffic signals. This gives pedestrians a three to seven-second head start to enter the crosswalk before drivers who must yield before making a turn."This change makes pedestrians more visible for drivers," Nick Zinser, NCDOT's Western Region Signals Engineer, said. "It's a safety enhancement, and it can be done at a low cost by reprogramming the existing equipment at our traffic signals."LPIs are already common in downtown Charlotte and Raleigh. The press release...

What happens to Robinson if Cooper becomes VP pick?
As speculation grows over Governor Roy Cooper being among the top four Democratic contenders to be a Vice Presidential running mate for Kamala Harris, it's also raising questions of what happens to his current position in North Carolina, and what powers Republican Lt. Governor Mark Robinson would have as acting Governor while he is away campaigning.Ironically, we're in this situation because, under North Carolina law, Governor Cooper didn't get to do what Kamala Harris or presidential candidates get to do, which is choose their own running mate.Unlike in many other states where the Governor and Lt. Governor run as a...
