In Grand & Standing: Iconic 19th Century Hotels, celebrated archivist Diedre Duncan, who has worked for the Waldorf Astoria and Plaza Hotels, discusses the emergence and development of these and other opulent venues. According to a news release, such luxury hotels were “a uniquely American invention” seeing “unparalleled growth and use in New York City.”
Another School District Scam?
[EDITOR”S NOTE: The following Letter relates to a recent article in The Hour newspaper regarding Medard Thomas, principal of Norwalk’s Concord Magnet School. Thomas was placed on administrative leave last November for reasons the School District has declined to make public. The Hour reported that Thomas’ personnel record, which it accessed through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, revealed that he had received a reprimand alleging insubordination. However, the newspaper said: “The documents do not show whether the February 2023 reprimand or a December 2021 letter about Thomas’ alleged failure to follow district procedures were related to his leave.”]

What Should Our Transit Service Really Look Like?
What areas of Norwalk are currently well-served by bus, paratransit, and microtransit services? Where are there redundancies and how can service be improved?. Those were among the questions a Norwalk Transit District “State of the System” report aimed to answer. The report is part of an initiative from the Norwalk Transit District, NTD Ahead, which aims to “rethink bus service in Norwalk and southern Fairfield County.”
Microtransit to Expand in Norwalk and Across Region
Microtransit “is basically a cross between transit and Uber so it’s on-demand shared rides,” according to Frank Petise, Stamford’s Transportation Bureau Chief. The service usually involves a smaller vehicle th an a city bus—think minibus or SUV—paired with an app and phone number that allow users to request a ride, similar to ride sharing services like Uber. Multiple riders can be picked up by the same vehicle and dropped off at their destinations inside of the microtransit service areas.

After Heated Debate, Norwalk Council Sets Budget Cap at $440.6 Million
The Norwalk Common Council voted 11-4 on Tuesday to set this year’s budget cap at $440.6 million, rejecting pleas for additional funding in a heated debate. Council member Nicol Ayers pushed for an amendment to the cap, raising it by $300,000. While the Council does not have the ability to make line item changes in the budget, Ayers advocated for the additional funding to support the city’s IT department and the family navigator positions, which help connect residents to resources, such as energy assistance programs and early childhood care.
