Art Space wins grant to support free classes
The Norwalk Art Space’s unique free art and music classes for local students got a recent boost from a $4,799 “Supporting Arts Grant.” The money comes from The National Endowment for the Arts, by way of Connecticut’s Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of the Arts. Maritime Aquarium seal passes away
The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk announces the death of beloved harbor seal Tillie on Thursday Dec. 27, after several weeks of declining health. She was 37. Tillie was born at Mystic Aquarium on May 30, 1986, and came to The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk in November of 1988. Known for her “sweet personality, petite stature and big eyes,” she was highly attentive to her trainers, and was caught on camera kissing the late Paul Newman in 1997. The Aquarium’s animal husbandry and veterinary teams are awaiting the results of Tillie’s necropsy to determine the cause of her passing.

State DPH touts high vaccination rate in Norwalk and Danbury
Children in the Norwalk and Danbury areas have Connecticut’s highest vaccination rate, according to the state’s Department of Public Health. A news release says that of kids born in 2020, 85% of those in Danbury/Brookfield/Newtown/Ridgefield and 83% of those in Norwalk/Westport/Weston/New Canaan/Wilton received all recommended vaccines by their second birthday.
Norwalk BoE greenlights 8.2% budget increase ask
The Norwalk Board of Education moved forward Tuesday with an operating budget request that is 8.2% higher than this year’s budget. About 5% of that is needed just to maintain current services, Norwalk Public Schools Chief Financial Officer Lunda Asmani said. The rest is attributable to continuously increasing Special Education costs, an initiative to lighten the load on stressed elementary school teachers by providing more planning time, school lunch fund deficit spending and a desire to restore magnet school funding.
