Novel species found in Long Island Sound
A 1.5” sea slug capable of stressing Long Island Sound sponges’ ecological role was discovered by the Maritime Aquarium and Norwalk’s L-TRAP team members who were retrieving dormant lobster traps off Groton’s coast with Williams College and Project Oceanology colleagues. According to a news release, the slug is being held by the Aquarium, where its potential impact on the Sound is being studied.

P&Z Commission approves zoning regulation rewrite
Two years of effort culminated last week with new zoning regulations for Norwalk, expected to be effective Feb. 19. “While people can disagree, I believe that what we have before us is a model of good government, both in the process we followed and then the final result. I expect it will serve the city for many years to come,” Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Lou Schulman said ahead of the unanimous vote to approve the regulations Wednesday, after many tweaks in response to public comments.
Commerce Street detour expected to end soon
A Commerce Street detour has been frustrating drivers for weeks. It’s obvious the road is closed from the Wall Street side but in the other direction, the easiest solution is to go down Leonard Street and then cross Jason Milligan’s private parking lot to get to Isaacs Street, then to the desired Wall Street.
Norwalk Police arrest repeat offender on firearm charges
A man who was suspected of intending to commit mass murder in 2019 was found Thursday laying on a Norwalk bike path, dressed in camouflage, with a AK-47 styled assault rifle laying on the ground next to him, according to Norwalk Police. The rifle was determined to be an airsoft gun.
Murphy focuses on American loneliness as a policy issue
With the country deep in an “epidemic of loneliness and isolation,” according to the Surgeon General, one of Connecticut’s senators has proposed legislation. U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) introduced the Addressing Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults (SILO) Act last week, “legislation to establish a grant and training program for community-based organizations working to address social isolation among older adults and adults with disabilities – two populations at greater risk for loneliness,” according to a news release.

NPS to seek a 8.3% budget increase
Preliminary numbers indicate the Board of Education will be requesting a 8.3% budget increase for Fiscal Year 25. The $245.35 million 24/25 preliminary budget presented at Tuesday’s BoE meeting represents a $18.8 million increase over the current year. Norwalk Public Schools Chief Financial Officer Lunda Asmani observed that it’s common for the BoE to make a request and not see it fully funded, as “there’s always a delta, between what we ask and what we need and what we get … what we present now is our best estimate of the needs.”

Art Space offers concert
A free choir, guitar, and percussion concert performed by elementary and middle school students who took 12 weeks of classes in the Norwalk Art Space’s Petty-Drayton Music Program is set for Tuesday, Dec. 19 from 6 until 7 p.m. at the Art Space.
