Norwalk Public Schools names Jules Douge as a New Assistant Principal
The Norwalk Board of Education has approved the appointment of Jules Douge as a new assistant principal at West Rocks Middle School. He will join the administrative team led by Principal Adam Reynolds and work alongside current assistant principal Beth Amaral. Douge transfers to West Rocks from Kendall College & Career Academy where he has served as a social worker since 2018. He’s also been a member of the KCCA Instruction Team Leadership, the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Lead for the school, and an NPS Equity & Excellence Ambassador. Douge roots his educational philosophy in resilience, problem-solving, and decision-making skills that were forged during his childhood. His upbringing illuminated the collective changes faced by those from impoverished, labeled or disenfranchised backgrounds. He’s committed to addressing societal disparities and his expertise extends to social-emotional and academic earning for social justice leadership.

City acquires 11 Belden Ave. sliver through eminent domain process
The City has acquired 11 Belden Ave. to provide additional parking for Norwalk Public Library patrons, a news release said. Real estate mogul Jason Milligan, former owner of the property, clarified that the City has bought a .25-acre portion of his 1.25-acre lot, the area used for parking for six years under a six-year purchase option negotiated in 2017.
New Haven Center for Performing Arts completes purchase of Wall Street Theater
The Wall Street Theater has been purchased by New Haven Center for Performing Arts Inc (NHCPA) under NHCPA LLC, a news release said. The transaction came after former management reached a settlement in the foreclosure action filed by Patriot Bank. In December, then-Theater Company President Suzanne Cahill called the expected purchase “a historic and exciting change.”

Duchess faces lawsuit from former employee
A Norwalk man is suing Duchess Restaurant of Norwalk, Inc. and Duchess Worldwide, Inc., and their top brass, with charges that include unpaid wages and retaliation. Jonathan Fortier alleges the defendants violated Federal and Connecticut law by failing and refusing to pay him overtime at the rate of time-and-a-half his regular hourly rate, failing to pay him all wages due, refusing to allow him a day of rest after working excessive consecutive days, retaliating against him for requesting a day of rest, retaliating against him for seeking to take a sick day, and retaliating against him for taking a sick day after he worked an excessive number of consecutive days, regularly working 12 or more hours each day and more than 60 hours each week.
Heart Month ‘RED DAY’ is Friday
February is Heart Month, an annual observance highlighting the importance of cardiovascular health. Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States, causing an estimated 695,000 deaths in 2021, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC’s Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System states that more than 3,000 Norwalk adults reported a heart disease diagnosis.
Antisemitic harassment continues with Monday morning emails to Norwalk Council members
Norwalk Common Council members woke up Monday morning to find antisemitic emails in their inboxes. Last week, they all received antisemitic post cards at their homes. The correspondences come after antisemitic and racist comments made at the Jan. 16 Council Ordinance Committee meeting by people speaking remotely. Assistant Corporation Counsel Darin Callahan was running the Zoom session and worked to shut them down. Norwalk Police were called.

Golf carts on Norwalk streets? Traffic Authority says no
A proposal to allow golf carts on city streets in “specific shoreline neighborhoods in Norwalk” was unanimously opposed by the Norwalk Traffic Authority. Fior Lostumbo, owner of Connecticut Custom Carts, a golf cart dealership based in Norwalk—along with consultant J. Kevin Smith, who made the presentation—proposed regulations that would have allowed golf carts on streets in neighborhoods such as Rowayton, Harbor Shores, Harbor View, Village Creek, Marvin Beach, and parts of East Norwalk.
Kendall Principal Baker departing NPS
Kendall Magnet Elementary School Principal Zakiyyah Baker is leaving Norwalk Public Schools for a new job in her community, NPS said. Baker will start Feb. 23 as the new Principal of ACES Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School (WIMS), a K-8 magnet school in Hamden that serves students from several communities within New Haven County, ACES said in a news release.
