Board of Education, District D: Ashley Gulyas
Describe how your occupation assists you in serving on the Board of Education and give three brief but specific examples. I am currently in my 15th year of teaching music at independent schools in Fairfield County, so I would say my occupation will assist me very well in serving on the Board of Education! I am very aware of the many challenges facing teachers and look forward to being an advocate for educators’ needs and perspectives. I am also very aware of the way education has changed in recent years and the unique challenges we have faced with students’ emotional regulation and classroom behaviors following the Covid-19 pandemic. Lastly, in addition to being a teacher, I am a Norwalk Public Schools parent of a Kindergartener, so I would bring a current parent’s perspective and experience to the Board as well.
Board of Education, District D: Doug Hempstead
Describe how your occupation assists you in serving on the BOE and give three brief but specific examples. My former occupation as VP of Stew Leonard’s, as well as many years of service on Norwalk’s Common Council (including leadership positions), will benefit my role as a BOE member of Norwalk Public Schools. I also have additional experience on non- profit Boards including Mid-Fairfield Child Guidance Center, and Norwalk Communities in Schools. These, including others, have provided me the opportunities to deal with budgets, education and mental health issues, and interacting productively with members of a board as well as the public. Working at Stew Leonard’s has given me greater opportunities of working with people of all different ages and ethnic backgrounds, as well being responsible for budgets and projects. It has taught me how to listen, question, and learn, how to collaborate, use compassion, and how to lead.
Board of Education, District E: Mary Ellen Flaherty-Ludwig
Describe how your occupation assists you in serving on the BOE and give three brief but specific examples. My two brothers, two sisters and I learned early as we worked in our parents’ restaurant business that team work by cooperating and supporting each and cheerful responses to the public were key. This style of work ethic combined with the knowledge gained from four decades of teaching math and science in public middle and high schools put me in a strong position to contribute effectively on the board. Also, because I am retired I am able to put the time and effort that the task deserves.

Be kind and respectful no matter who you vote for
When I was growing up, I was taught to be kind and respectful to everyone. My mom often repeated the adage, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” These are lessons that my husband and I have passed down to our own children and talk about often.
