New Norwalk recycling effort offers cash for cans, plastic and glass bottles
Norwalkers can redeem plastic and glass bottles and aluminum cans for instant cash on Monday Sept. 25 and Monday Oct. 9 from 3 until 6 p.m. at 98 South Main Street in SoNo. According to a news release, EyeRecycle, the city’s partner in the event, will pay you five cents per item when you drop off, and there’s no redemption limit. If you buy an optional EyeRecycle reusable bag for 50 cents and load it up to the fill line, you’ll get $10.

Norwalk Art Space presents ‘planes of being’
Stream-of-consciousness visual artist Carlos RM says, “Everything is incomplete. Everything is in constant motion; everything is changing as we see it.” His dreamlike paintings are showcased in “A Journey Through the Planes of Being,” at the Norwalk Art Space now until Thursday Dec. 7. According to a news release, the exhibit’s free opening reception is on Saturday Sept. 30 at 6 p.m., and will include performances by East Coast Contemporary Ballet and the Art Space’s musical partner INTEMPO.
Norwalk Republicans endorse Independents, causing ‘disappointment,’ member’s exit
Norwalk Republicans have swapped out five of the candidates they announced in July for Independent candidates presented by Lisa Brinton in August. The cross endorsements prompted one jilted candidate to resign from the Republican Executive Committee and sharply criticize Republican Town Committee Chairman Fred Wilms. Former Republican Common Council member Tom Keegan, speaking from Florida, called the developments “so disappointing.”
Norwalk’s water commissions oppose Industrial Waterfront Land Use Plan
Planning and Zoning Commissioners plan to take action Wednesday on a Norwalk Industrial Waterfront Land Use Plan, after a public hearing. They’ll need a two-thirds vote in favor, as the Harbor Management Commission declined to make a favorable recommendation. The Mayor’s Water Quality Committee and the Shellfish Commission also oppose the plan.

NPL to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month will be celebrated in several free Norwalk Public Library events, according to a news release. From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday Sept. 23, Library Assistant Shelly Yong will present music, dances, and cuisine that reflect the cultures of Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela at the Norwalk Public Library’s SoNo Branch, located at 10 Washington St. The Guest of Honor will be Jesus Anthony Bravo, President of the Association Colombo Hispanic American of Connecticut. Read Auerbach has won the Norwalk firefighters union endorsement in his drive to win a District C Common Council seat. Auerbach, a Republican, is a retired Norwalk firefighter. He faces Democrats Jenn McMurrer, an incumbent, and Melissa Murray, as well as Independent candidate Carl Cooke. There are two seats available.

Norwalk Police investigate Saturday night shooting
Three people were shot Saturday night at Roodner Court, Norwalk Police said. The 911 call reporting that a person had been shot at 261 Ely Ave. came in at 10:12 p.m., a news release said. Officers arrived within two minutes and found two victims, a man who had been shot in the back and a woman who was shot in the arm. They were taken by ambulance to Norwalk Hospital.
Patriot Bank seeks to foreclose on Wall Street Theater loan
Patriot Bank and The Wall Street Theater are duking it out in court over a $3 million “permanent loan.”. Patriot, in a July filing, seeks to foreclose on an $8.8 million loan the bank says the nonprofit has defaulted on. Wall Street, in filings on that case and in a lawsuit filed in June, states that Patriot purposefully made loans to the theater knowing they couldn’t be repaid. Patriot refinanced the $3 million loan to make it $8.8 million, according to Wall Street, which alleges Patriot made false statements in “intentional” and “negligent” misrepresentations.

Walsh denies social media accusation of NPD neglect
Norwalk Police deny ignoring an elderly woman as she crawled up the stairs to her home, as alleged on social media in posts featuring a brief video. After seeing the video, the department conducted a full investigation, Norwalk Police Chief James Walsh said Friday in a news release. “Without any other context, it could appear that the elderly woman was improperly disregarded. However, after conducting a thorough investigation, which includes evidence of the woman being offered medical assistance, once by paramedics and a second time by the Norwalk Police, it is clear that there is no evidence of neglect.”

Ciccarello remembered as devoted public servant who enjoyed food and breaking out in song
Lou Ciccarello, whose Norwalk political career was topped by a stint as District 25 State Senator from 1975 to 1977, has died. “Senator Louis Ciccarello was a treasure to Norwalk residents, and I am deeply saddened to learn about his passing. Through his zest for public service and love for the Norwalk community, he made tremendous, lasting contributions to Norwalk residents throughout his lifetime,” Mayor Harry Rilling said in a Tuesday statement.
