Reacting To A Broken Blade - Editorial
The damage that occurred last weekend to the Vineyard Wind turbine off the coast of Nantucket, though regrettable, hardly represents a major industrial accident. There is still much to be learned as to how and why the 351-foot blade was left so badly damaged and all parties involved need to take the investigation into this situation seriously—especially since most of what had remained of the massive blade had also plummeted into the waters below by midday Thursday. The Coast Guard is reported to have recovered a whopping 300-foot-long piece of the blade.
Reacting To A Broken Blade
The damage to the 351-foot blade of a Vineyard Wind turbine, though regrettable, hardly represents a major industrial accident. Much still needs to be determined as to how and why the damaged occurred; all parties involved, especially Vineyard Wind, need to take the investigation into this situation seriously. This incident does not, on the face of it, appear to be a major blow to the wind power.

Barstool owner rescued by Coast Guard after losing control of boat off Nantucket
The owner and founder of Barstool Sports lost control of a boat off Massachusetts before being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. Dave Portnoy, 47, said in a TikTok video that the harrowing Monday rescue off Nantucket happened after he unhooked his boat from buoys. Heavy winds then caused him to drift out to sea, and his engine was dead, he said.
Dave Portnoy rescued by Coast Guard after boat goes adrift off Nantucket: ‘We almost lost Captain Dave’
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy and his mom had to be rescued by the US Coast Guard Monday after his boat suddenly lost power and went adrift off Nantucket. “Your boys almost lost Captain Dave today,” the 47-year-old revealed in a video posted on social media. The sea saga unfolded after Portnoy said he unhooked his 28-foot boat from a dock in one of the exclusive Massachusetts vacation island’s harbors — only to realize the vessel’s engine and breakers were dead. Dave Portnoy Almost Got Lost At Sea
Dave bought a boat and was taking it out for the 3rd time ever and unhooked his boat before checking if the engine and breaker were working. So he ended up floating out to sea, or the harbor of Nantucket. Very unfortunate situation. I do not know what type of Boat Dave has. I feel like it could be a Boston Whaler, but most likely something much nicer. The thing about boats is you don't really want a boat, you want to know someone with a boat. If you own a boat, you kind of just want something pretty simple like a Boston Whaler. I feel like if you are Dave everyone expects you to have a sick nice boat and not something simple. So you end up with something that is going to have more issues. Like you don't want to get a boat where you need a crew. Dave probably doesn't want a yacht with a crew because he wants a noncommittal boat relationship. I honestly feel bad for him because he can't just have an easy, cheaper boat that always reliably works, he needs to have something that does impress and isn't some Joe Schmo's boat. Now the coast guard has to save you in the middle of the harbor.

A wind turbine is damaged off Nantucket Island. Searchers are combing beaches for debris
NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) — Offshore wind developers have sent teams to search for debris on the beaches of Nantucket Island, a popular summer tourist destination, after one of their turbine blades suffered damage. Vineyard Wind said Tuesday it is mobilizing teams on Nantucket to recover debris on south-facing beaches. The development said a “blade damage incident” took place Saturday. Vineyard Wind said it’s also working with the U.S. Coast Guard to maintain a safety zone of 500 meters (1,640 feet) around the affected offshore turbine. It said that the debris consists of nontoxic fiberglass fragments and that any washing ashore will be pieces of one square foot or less. “Vineyard Wind is fully committed to a swift and safe recovery of all debris, with an unwavering focus on community safety and environmental protection,” it said in a statement.
