Biking through the Mists of Memory
I follow a boy to the beach. He pedals a brown 12-speed Univega with red panniers hanging off the rear rack, as if he were pedaling across the country and needed to bring everything he would ever need. The boy is bent over the racing handlebars, with his hands resting on the lower handles and his butt raised by a fraction of an inch off the seat. He wears a Campagnolo bicycling cap, although his bike has no rat traps for his feet nor is he wearing a helmet.
Select Board Ousts Chairman Ian Golding From Conservation Commission
For the second time in as many years, the Select Board has ousted the chair of the Conservation Commission in favor of a relative newcomer on a 3-2 vote. Ian Golding, who has served on the Commission for 12 years and took over as chair after Ashley Erisman was not reappointed by the Select Board last year, was replaced Wednesday by Jon Schafer, the founder of a regional development and construction company who has never attended a Conservation Commission meeting.

Cool as a cucumber in the heat of summer
(June 27, 2024) Summer’s first “heat wave” managed to garner a lot of national headline news over this past week, but for those of us lucky enough to be on Cape Cod and the islands, it pretty much just felt like welcome summer beach weather. In fact,...
Disconnect over PFAS response at "forever chemicals" forum
(June 27, 2024) There appears to be a disconnect between town officials and the public over efforts to address PFAS contamination of private wells. Members of the public who attended an informational PFAS summit Tuesday said the town is simply not doing enough. They claim it is not being proactive and dragging its heels on responding to the public’s concerns. They also said the town needs to be more transparent about PFAS testing results and possible hotpots.

Encouraging careers on the water starts early
(June 27, 2024) The water temperature in the harbor has officially reached 70 degrees and there is sunshine in the weekend forecast ahead. Last week’s full strawberry moon is waning, leaving behind distant tides and untouched shorelines. Every tide turns over a new leaf, revealing surprises and possibilities, much like commencement times.
A laybrinth of nature at the Peter Folger Homestead
(June 27, 2024) The urge to “Go, Go, Go!” rings out as the summer season revs into high gear. The rose-scented winds of June rain pollen down upon us and I find myself in the busiest part of my season. It is not the traffic or the long lines at The Juice Bar which troubles me, but the threat of missing something natural and amazing this time of year in the wide world outside.

Who’s in charge of Nantucket’s food and wine festival? That’s the subject of a federal lawsuit.
Chances are, there will be some kind of food and wine festival in Nantucket May 14-18 next year. We just don’t know which version yet. That’s because two parties are laying to claim to the annual event at the same date and venue. On one side there’s Nancy Bean, who has owned the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival since 2013. The festival, which draws about 3,000 people each year, has been a popular event on the island for over a quarter of a century. The White Elephant hotel has hosted the festival for about a decade.
