Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy nearly dies and thanks Coast Guard for saving his life after being lost at sea

DAVE Portnoy has been rescued by the Coast Guard after his boat drifted out to sea off Nantucket Island.

The Barstool Sports founder set off a distress flare during the scary incident on Monday.

Portnoy revealed in a viral video he planned to take his mom out for a boat ride in “heavy winds.”

But after removing his craft from its buoys, he discovered both the engine and breakers were dead.

The 47-year-old shouted for help as the craft drifted through the crowded Nantucket harbor.

A woman sailing nearby boarded Portnoy’s boat and called the coastguard, with “four burly dudes” arriving to prevent the craft from drifting out to sea.

“[I had] no power, no radio, no anchor, no nothing,” Portnoy said in a video posted on TikTok.

“Heavy, heavy, winds. Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea.

“Your boys almost lost Captain Dave today. Captain Dave was almost lost to Mother Ocean.”

Portnoy added that the woman who helped save him had requested they film a TikTok together before radioing in for help.

“No time for TikToks,” he reportedly told her, per The Daily Mail .

“Praise the lord! We cannot afford to lose an American hero,” wrote one fan in response to Portnoy’s video on X.

“Half way to Costa Rica. But saved by a girl in a rowboat lol,” laughed another.

“This is hilarious in a serious kind of way,” said a third.

The Coast Guard confirmed on Monday it had towed Portnoy’s boat back to its mooring.

“Sector Southern New England received a report from U.S Coast Guard Station Brant Point of an approximately 28′ pleasure craft belonging to Dave Portnoy,” a Coast Guard statement read, via Boston.com .

“[The boat] broke free of its mooring in Nantucket Harbor and was drifting through the area.”

Portnoy founded Barstool in 2004 and is now worth around $150 million, per Celebrity Net Worth .

He recently shocked fans after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Portnoy revealed the diagnosis on an episode of The BFFs podcast when his co-hosts noticed a scar on his neck

“I went to a doctor, did a skin thing, they scrape it, and one of them came back cancerous; got to take it out,” Portnoy said.

He added the cancer “wasn’t the serious kind, thank god.”
