As an East Coast native, I can confidently say there’s nothing quite like a New England summer. The crisp mornings that melt away by noon, the salty sea that never quite loses its chill, the Atlantic oysters , ice-cold rosé and sweet lobster rolls that round out every roadside menu. Though I grew up on the shores of New Jersey , I spent many summers up north, just off the coast of Massachusetts, with family, friends and friends-of-friends in places like Cape Cod , Martha’s Vineyard and—most recently— Nantucket .
While wandering through the cobblestone streets of “The Grey Lady” (as people lovingly call this small plot of land just south of the Cape), I was struck by the charming beauty of both the cedar-shingled homes that dot the island and the well-dressed vacationers who inhabit them. Here, five summer fashion trends I saw all over Nantucket, from classic Americana to the sunnies of the season .
Thanks in part to an Olympics year, stars and stripes were in no short supply this summer. From sweatshirts and crewnecks (like this Vineyard Vines version you can steal from the men’s section) to swimsuits and accessories, the American flag and its iconic trio of red, white and blue were just about everywhere, making a sartorial splash amongst vacationers young and old. Merging patriotism with New England prep, brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren have been at it for years—curating classic Americana looks that feel both timeless and nostalgic (and so very ACK).
PureWow called this handbag trend at the start of the summer, so I wasn’t surprised when I began to spot refined versions of raffia and straw all over the island. From coffee runs at Lemon Press to late nights at The Chicken Box , it seemed like every other woman was toting around this summertime staple—and the styles went well beyond the typical slouchy shoulder bag. Clamshell clutches and structured minis sat atop bar stools and white linen tables alike, replacing the usual barrage of black leather handbags and designer crossbodies.
During my short stay on the island, I spotted this old-school sunglass style on more cool girls than I could count. Beating out aviators and wayfarers by a surprisingly large margin, it’s clear the retro look of a rounded frame is making a comeback amongst the posh and preppy. What’s more surprising? It looked good on just about everyone.
It’s no surprise that summer’s biggest fashion trend made its way out to this northeastern hotspot (in fact, if it weren’t for Zendaya , I’d argue it originated here). With preppy roots that strike the perfect balance between sporty and chic, tenniscore seemed to be the unofficial uniform of the off-duty New Englander. From pointelle sports bras and tennis skirts to Wilson caps and polo sweaters, I spotted looks all over the island (both on and off the court) affirming that this new era of luxury athleisure is more than just a passing trend.
Crewnecks and cardigans are two classic Nantucket staples. (Can you call it a New England summer if you didn’t perfect the country club tie ? I think not.) But while boutique hopping down Broad Street, I noticed more and more shelves filled with surprising summer fabrics like cashmere and wool (as opposed to cotton and polyester). The reason being? They’re lightweight, breathable, temperature regulating, moisture wicking and perfect for layering, whether you’re planning a sunset sail around the sound or an evening bonfire on the beach.
