PASSHE board accepts PA's nearly $614M appropriation, a 6% increase over 2023-24
HARRISBURG — In a special meeting Wednesday morning, the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education accepted the commonwealth's 2024-25 appropriation of nearly $614.8 million, an increase of 6% over 2023-24, as well as a tuition fee freeze for a sixth consecutive year for Indiana University of Pennsylvania and nine sister institutions.

Gerald L. Thomas, 90, formerly of Thomasdale, died July 16, 2024 at Laurel View Village, Davidsville. He was born on March 4, 1934 in Thomas Mills, son of J. Wesley and Bessie M. (Weaver) Thomas. He was preceded in death by wife, Joyce E. (Stemmler) Thomas on April 5, 2024; brothers, Richard and R. Glenn Thomas and infant twin sisters Irene and Arlene. Survived by son, Douglas B. Thomas, married to the former Roberta A. Folton and sister-in-law Margaret of Davidsville. Gerald was a 1952 graduate of Conemaugh Township High School and a graduate of Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia. He also received a degree as a Nurse Anesthetist from Reading Hospital. He retired from Mercy Hospital of Johnstown as a Nurse Anesthetist. He enjoyed working on and rebuilding any vehicle with an engine. He was a member of AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America), including charter member of the Flood City Region of AACA and was a member of Early V-8 Ford Club and EMMR (Eastern Museum of Motor Racing). At his request there will be no viewing or service. Interment at Thomas Mennonite Church Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. PSP INVESTIGATING INCIDENT NEAR REGENCY MALL COMPLEX
State police are investigating an incident that occurred near the Regency Mall complex last night. The investigation started at 5:23 PM near Pompano Drive of White Township in The Grove apartment complex. State police Public Information Officer Trooper Cliff Greenfield said that during that incident, officers conducted a traffic stop in front of Tres Amigos on a vehicle that was believed to be involved in the incident.

During the Blarisville Borough Council Meeting, Mayor Ronald Evanko expressed some concern that people were not getting proper permits for home construction projects. Evanko said during the meeting that he is seeing construction projects, like roofing, going on for one day, but they do not have the proper permits for it. JANE COLEMAN, CO-FOUNDER OF ACCENT FUELS, DIES AT THE AGE OF 86
One of the founders of a long-standing fuel sales business has passed away. Jane Coleman of Brush Valley founded Accent Fuels with her husband in 1964. She worked there for almost 50 years before Accent’s warehouse was destroyed by a fire in 2013. The business had been sold to their sons prior to the fire on West Indiana Street. The business is still in operation today.
TWO VEHICLES DAMAGED BY FIRE AT BLAIRSVILLE WALMART
A car was destroyed by a fire Tuesday afternoon in Burrell Township. Blairsville and Black Lick firefighters were summoned to the parking lot of the Blairsville Walmart around 11:49 a.m. for a car that was fully engulfed by flames. Ab Dettorre with the Blairsville Fire Department said that car was a total loss and one next to it sustained damage from melted plastic.

The District 31 Senior Legion All-Section Team was released yesterday, and several Indiana County stars made the team. Homer City Post 493 infielder Braden Dunn and outfielder Rocco Cosentino both made first team. Dunn batted .407 and had an OPS of .985, with 22 Hits, 16 RBIs, and 17 runs. MOTIONS HEARING SET FOR SUSPECT IN GAREFFA KILLING
A motions hearing is set for today for one of the people accused in the death of Hayden Gareffa. Court Documents show that the hearing for 20-year-old Summer Settlemeyer will be held today in front of Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco. The hearing is dealing with motions concerning Settlemeyer’s mental health. She was one of seven adults and one juvenile that were charged with coercing Gareffa to leave his grandmother’s home and stabbed him multiple times before leaving him for dead in a field of tall grass off Oneida Mine Road in Brush Valley Township in 2022. Settlemeyer is charged with criminal homicide, kidnapping to facilitate a felony, kidnapping to inflict injury or terror, aggravated assault, conspiracy to those four charges along with statutory sexual assault.
MAN CHARGED WITH HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE DUE IN COURT FOR STATUS CONFERENCE
A status conference is scheduled for today for a man charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and other crimes. Court documents show that 24-year-old Reed Tantlinger of Homer City will go before President Judge Thomas Bianco for the conference today. Along with the previously mentioned charge, he is accused of accident where the victim dies, two counts of DUI-controlled substance, along with seven summary traffic counts in connection with an incident on January 7th, 2023 that killed 25-year-old Hunter McCloskey. The crash happened in the Westbound lanes of Route 422 in Pine Township as Tantlinger allegedly rear-ended McCloskey’s vehicle, pushing him into several boulders and a utility pole along the side of the road. Tantlinger fled the scene but was later found at a relative’s house.
