Red Devil wrestlers preparing for nationals trip to Fargo
Advancing to the USA Wrestling Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota can be a rarity for high school athletes. But at Central Cambria, the odds were defied even more as three grapplers will advance to the national tournament July 13-20. Burke Niebauer, Hayden Strittmatter and Jake Wilson are all set to contend at one of wrestling’s biggest stages this week, providing plenty of optimism for a program that is on the rise.
Erik Jones wins UARA Super Late Model race at Jennerstown
Erik Jones had never seen Jennerstown Speedway until Wednesday and he became a winner there in the UARA Motor Mountain Masters 150 by Thursday night. Driving his No. 4 Port City chassis, Jones led the first 22 laps before conceding the lead over to Johnny Sauter in the Wauters Motorsports No. 5. Sauter was penalized at the halfway break, for two infractions, parking at the hauler and for the team working on the car too soon.
Two IUP alumni donate $2 million to the university's proposed college of osteopathic medicine
INDIANA, Pa. (KDKA) - As Indiana University of Pennsylvania continues to make progress on its proposed college of osteopathic medicine, the university recently got a significant donation to help the effort going forward. IUP announced that two graduates, Tim and Debra Phillips Cejka have gifted the university $2 million saying they recognize the "good that it will do and the lives it will save." The Westmoreland County natives are 1973 graduates of IUP and Tim has received the Distinguished Alumni Award and has also served on IUP's Council of Trustees since 2018. Blueberry Sale July 20 at Rector church
Rector Independent Church will host a Blueberry Sale fundraiser Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. until sold out in the church parking lot, off Route 381 in Rector. Central PA Humane Society faces urgent need for fosters amid surge
In a Facebook post on Saturday, officials with the Central PA Humane Society in Altoona explained that they’ve taken in over three thousand animals since 2021. Tight squeeze
Utility crews and local police officers were on hand Wednesday afternoon to assist a truck hauling an oversize load along Pleasant Valley Boulevard. At the intersection of Duff Drive and South 27th Street, near the Altoona Housing Authority, utility crews using bucket trucks lifted the wires and watched as the load cleared the area. A second oversize load followed the first, but did not require the same clearance. The effort backed up traffic for a short time.
