A star spangled effort: Jackson girl raises money for cancer research with patriotic stars
JACKSON TWP. – A simple craft enjoyed by a 9-year-old and her dad has become a chance to help those battling cancer, including her grandmother. McKenna Wilson has raised around $2,000 painting red, white and blue stars on the yards of friends and family. The money raised will be donated to Johns Hopkins' cancer research center.
Fishing derby
The ICHTHYS Bass Club of Altoona held its 16th annual Jack Swisher Memorial Fishing Derby on May 25 at Canoe Creek State Park, Hollidaysburg. A total of 11 children from Juniata Valley Elementary School spent the morning and afternoon with the club members. The children were given a derby T-shirt, a tackle box filled with fishing items and also a quality rod and reel to keep. The children were given safety instructions on the proper way to use their fishing equipment by Dale A. Harten, club president. Each child was partnered with a member or volunteer and went fishing for several hours. Lunch was provided. The club raised about $1,500 for the event. Donations were made by the following sponsors (all are from Altoona except where noted): Colleen Swisher, Frostburg, Fla.; Horseshoe Curve Chapter of the Harley Owners Group; DJ’s Cafe, Tyrone; American Legion Riders Post 520, Alexandria; Hamers Auto Body and Towing; Intrepid Design LLC; Rudy’s Lawn Care, Port Matilda; Double Tap Indoor Gun Range; Shields Brothers and Mallow’s Hardware. YEDLOSKY, VINCENT M., 82, Northern Cambria, passed away July 13, 2024, in Altoona. Born January 18, 1942, in Barnesboro, the son of Michael and Odesa (Keith) Yedlosky. Preceded in death by parents; wife, Cecelia (Green) Yedlosky; and sister, Katherine Keith Riddle. Survived by children, Michael Yedlosky, Grassflat; Kathy Yedlosky, Northern Cambria; Nancy Yedlosky, Colver; Dolly Weber, Ebensburg; Brian Yedlosky, Colver; Cory Yedlosky, Huntingdon; 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Vince worked many years as a self-employed plumber and pipefitter. Honoring his request there will be no public services. Interment will be in McDowell Cemetery. Moriconi Funeral Home, Inc., Northern Cambria in charge of arrangements.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 points, and Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark finished with 17 points each to help the Indiana Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx 81-74 on Sunday. Boston grabbed a career-best 16 rebounds and blocked four shots for the Fever. NaLyssa Smith added 11 points.
Area family recalls Saturday's unfortunate incident
Families from across west-central Pennsylvania were in attendance at Saturday’s Donald Trump rally at the Butler Farm Show grounds in Connoquenessing Township, Butler County. That included Rick Stancombe Jr. of Johnstown and his daughter Jenna, who were accompanied to the rally by his father Rick Stancombe Sr. of Indiana.
PSP INVESTIGATING INCIDENT NEAR REGENCY MALL COMPLEX
State police are investigating an incident that occurred near the Regency Mall complex last night. The investigation started at 5:23 PM near Pompano Drive of White Township in The Grove apartment complex. State police Public Information Officer Trooper Cliff Greenfield said that during that incident, officers conducted a traffic stop in front of Tres Amigos on a vehicle that was believed to be involved in the incident.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Indiana rookie Caitlin Clark broke the WNBA record for assists in a game Wednesday night, finishing with 19 in the Fever’s 101-93 loss to the Dallas Wings. The previous record was 18 by Courtney Vandersloot for Chicago on Aug. 31, 2020. Vandersloot also had 18 in a playoff game on Sept. 28, 2021. And the league’s previous record for assists by a rookie was 16, set by Ticha Penicheiro for Sacramento on July 29, 1998. The record-breaker for Clark came on a play where she set Kelsey Mitchell up for a 3-pointer with 2:22 remaining. That tied it at 93, but Dallas closed with an 8-0 run. Clark entered the game as the WNBA’s assists-per-game leader this season. She added 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting.
‘4Mick’ tourney set for Hess Fields
The seventh annual fast-pitch softball tournament held in memory of Mikayla “Mick” Focht will have a new venue for this year’s event. Instead of Legion Park in Hollidaysburg, the tournament will be held on Aug. 10-11 at Hess Fields in State College. Logan Elementary School Fields in Altoona will also be used again.
City man’s appeal of life sentence denied
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Tuesday denied an appeal requested by an Altoona man serving a life sentence for the 2002 murders of an elderly Altoona couple. The bodies of Raymond Bracken, 83, and his wife, Marjorie, 81, were found in their Spruce Avenue home after neighbors became concerned when they saw the daily newspaper was on their porch for a couple of days. They were aware Mr. Bracken liked to read the paper the first thing in the morning.
