A star spangled effort: Jackson girl raises money for cancer research with patriotic stars
JACKSON TWP. – A simple craft enjoyed by a 9-year-old and her dad has become a chance to help those battling cancer, including her grandmother. McKenna Wilson has raised around $2,000 painting red, white and blue stars on the yards of friends and family. The money raised will be donated to Johns Hopkins' cancer research center.

ALS walk keeps growing, raising funds for patients
Jeremy Portash’s interest in the Walk to Defeat ALS began nearly two decades ago when his grandmother, Phyllis Connelly, died from the disease in 2005. Today, the Portage resident is a committee member for the regional walk, and said the event brings people together every year to raise funds toward finding a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive nervous system disease that gradually deteriorates the ability to walk, talk, swallow and — eventually — to breathe.

The District 31 Senior Legion All-Section Team was released yesterday, and several Indiana County stars made the team. Homer City Post 493 infielder Braden Dunn and outfielder Rocco Cosentino both made first team. Dunn batted .407 and had an OPS of .985, with 22 Hits, 16 RBIs and 17 runs. Cosentino batted .378 with an OPS of 1.138, 14 hits, 3 doubles, 4 triples, 15 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

White Township man waives strangulation charge to Armstrong County court
KITTANNING — Strangulation and other charges against an Indiana County resident have been waived to court. On Wednesday, James William Taylor’s right to a preliminary hearing was waived, a move which prompted Kittanning Magisterial District Judge Kenneth Bussard to bind their case over to the Armstrong County Court of Common Pleas.
MOTIONS HEARING SET FOR SUSPECT IN GAREFFA KILLING
A motions hearing is set for today for one of the people accused in the death of Hayden Gareffa. Court Documents show that the hearing for 20-year-old Summer Settlemeyer will be held today in front of Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco. The hearing is dealing with motions concerning Settlemeyer’s mental health. She was one of seven adults and one juvenile that were charged with coercing Gareffa to leave his grandmother’s home and stabbed him multiple times before leaving him for dead in a field of tall grass off Oneida Mine Road in Brush Valley Township in 2022. Settlemeyer is charged with criminal homicide, kidnapping to facilitate a felony, kidnapping to inflict injury or terror, aggravated assault, conspiracy to those four charges along with statutory sexual assault.
