    Man struck by lightning while vacationing in Naples on Aug. 31 dies from injuries

    A man vacationing in Naples struck by lighting on Aug. 31 has died from his injuries.

    According to the website, cubanheadlines.com , Adrián García (Adrián Chile García), who had been in critical condition at a Florida hospital ( Naples Community Hospital ) since the lightning strike on Aug. 31 at a Naples beach, passed away Saturday (Sept. 14). The story about his death was posted on Saturday.

    Around 5:50 p.m. on Aug. 31, Naples police officers responded to the Naples Pier , 25 12th Ave. S., in reference to a medical emergency on the beach where at least nine people deluged dispatchers with calls for help.

    When they arrived, bystanders yelled, saying several people were struck by lightning down by the water .

    Officers said in the report they ran to the water, where witnesses were already performing CPR on García, 24, who was visiting from Hialeah, Florida .

    A second man, identified as Maikel Rojas Bencomo, 43, of Miami, suffered minor injuries from the lightning strike.

    According to the cubanheadlines.com website, the lightning strike had "caused severe brain damage, leaving García dependent on a ventilator, with his family hoping for a miracle."

    According to the National Lightning Safety Council :

    • This is the 10th lightning fatality of the year in the U.S
    • This is the fourth fatality so far in Florida
    • Based on the past 10 years, the U.S. averages 20 lightning fatalities through Sept. 14.
    • Florida leads the nation in lightning fatalities, now with 92 since 2006, including the four this year.
    • According to the National Lightning Safety Council, beach activities are the second greatest cause of lightning fatalities in the U.S., now with 32 since 2006, including two this year. Florida leads  the nation in beach-related lightning deaths, now with 12.
