The use of a mask will be mandatory again in Los Angeles starting Sunday. It does not matter if we have been vaccinated. The number of Covid-19 infections in Los Angeles made the authorities decide on this measure.

According to the data provided by the Mayo Clinic organization, More than 3,000 new cases occur in California, of which about 1,000 correspond to Los Angeles County.

Dr. Muntu Davis, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, said it is unfortunate, but "Los Angeles is not where it should be," referring to the state of alert for the health situation, which is a given danger the Delta variant.

Los Angeles County is the second in population in the United States with 10.04 million inhabitants.

This measure is a "necessary setback." Although only two months ago, the authorities announced the removal of the masks in vaccinated people. Approximately two weeks ago, the population was advised to use the masks again indoors.

    What the statistics say

By the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 62.9% of the total population of California has at least one dose of the vaccine; only 51.4% have both amounts. The percentage decreases as age decrease, so that younger people, those who are more exposed, have a lower rate:

    • Under 18 years, only 13.3%
    • Between 18 and 64 years old, 59.2%
    • Only those 65 years or more aged have a percentage of 81.1%

According to the Official California State Government Website, the ethnicities with the highest percentage are White with 35.3% and Latina with 28.3%. But still, many minorities continue with very low vaccination percentages, either because access is more complicated or because they do not want to be vaccinated.

As of July 15, 2021, California has 3,743,714 confirmed cases of COVID-19, which have resulted in 63,533 deaths. Only today, 16 July in California, 3,622 cases have been reported. Taking into account that Los Angeles County has an average of 1000 cases per day. The number of cases only for the county is worrying.

Why the mask if you are vaccinated?

By numerous scientific studies, vaccines against the new coronavirus work to protect against covid-19. But still, we can prevent or stop transmission if you do not know to what level. Due to the significant increase in the county and city of Los Angeles, the health authorities cannot take risks.
