The New variant and the impact on Tourism in the City

The city of Los Angeles is among the most visited in the US. According to Los Angeles Business Journal, Los Angeles welcomed 50 million visitors in 2018, setting records with 42.5 million domestic visitors and 7.5 million international visitors. Adam Burke, president, and CEO of Los Angeles Tourism, indicated that the closure of the city during 2020 and part of 2021 as a health measure negatively affected all those who depend on the tourism sector.

The Delta variant has once again sparked panic among residents, visitors, and the hundreds of thousands of people still waiting to meet Hollywood. The mandatory mask use order is proof that the state does not want to risk a significant increase in the variant, which is considered highly contagious.

Although the leading authorities have not indicated new measures for the arrival of tourists, according to a publication made on July 15, by CNN, among the countries that are already increasing the standards and that are closely following the Delta variant are: France, Australia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia, which is currently being hit hard by the virus.

"Tourism supported 534,258 jobs in Los Angeles Country, Leisure & Hospitality sector, its highest total on record, employing 1 in every 8.5 workers in the county." Adam Burke.

According to Burke, Pre-Pandemic Tourism had hit record highs for nine consecutive years. The attractiveness of Los Angeles drew the attention of travelers from all over the world, who held 544,700 jobs in entertainment and hospitality.

Doubts and Uncertainty

During the beginning of the pandemic, California authorities ordered the closure of museums, theme parks, restaurants, sports venues, and other places where there was an accumulation of people. With the decrease in covid-19 cases and the advance of vaccination, the main places have gradually reopened and the arrival of tourists too. However, the recent re-implementation of masks in the city is proof that the state does not want to risk a significant increase in the variant, which is considered highly contagious.

Although the vaccine is not yet mandatory, we do not know how NOT BEING VACCINATED can affect future travelers and the tourism process.
