    After heavy rains, an overtopped dam forces Nashville, Illinois, to be evacuated

    After extensive rain on Monday night, a Nashville, Illinois, dam overtopped forcing the evacuation of approximately 200 people who live downstream. First responders rescued at least one resident from her home .

    According to the Washington County Emergency Management Agency, two failures on the Nashville Reservoir dam prompted the evacuation. Rescue personnel assisted residents escape the potentially dangerous situation. Some residents reported waist-deep water, the press release stated . The National Weather Service predicts more thunderstorms to continue this evening in the area .

    According to the agency, the immediate danger to those in the area has been managed.

    Nashville is about 45 miles southeast of St. Louis.

    Where was the evacuation ordered in the Nashville dam?

    Washington County Emergency Management Agency issued the notice on their Facebook page alerting all residents to evacuate in the area downstream of the dam.

    The post read: "Secondary Dam Failure, area has been overtopped with flood waters, please evacuate if you are in the below shaded area!"

    "Attention The Failure of the Nashville dam is imminent. Please evacuate your home at this time," the post continues.

    The heavy rains also flooded nearby St. Louis. The St. Louis Fire department posted to X , video of Engine House 29 basement filling with water.
