Point Streaks: Current Predators vs 2017-18 Team

A 15-game point streak in the NHL is impressive however you look at it. The team is definitely gaining in the standings as other teams are bound to lose in regulation. The Nashville Predators took full advantage of this. Not only were the teams ahead of them struggling when their now 16-game point streak started, the team is well clear of the playoff cutoff this season and would have to collapse to not make it into the postseason.

When looking at this current Predators team and the only time the franchise has recorded points in 15 consecutive games before, this Nashville team this season is better and more impressive in a lot of ways.

Even though the Predators have now run their point streak to 16 games, we are going to look at the first 15 games of each to have an even comparison. While the numbers are in favour of the 2023-24 Predators' run being better, the point streak extending past 15 games and setting a new record puts this team over the top.

In terms of what the current Predators have done, their goals-per-game (GF/GP) is 4.3 with 33.2 shots-per-game (S/GP). That shooting percentage of 13% doesn't indicate a tilted ice when it comes to puck luck, but just a team being able to finish at a solid rate. The 2017-18 Predators scored 3.93 G/GP with 35.6 S/GP. While the average goals that team scored isn't bad by any means and the shots are impressive, that's a S% of 11%, a fair bit lower than your current Predators.

Where it evens up a bit more is at the other end. The current Predators gave up 1.9 goals against-per-game (GA/GP) through the first 15 games of the point streak while the Predators of six years ago gave up 1.8 GA/GP. The overall differential goes to the 2023-24 Predators, but the 17/18 team allowed 32.3 shots against-per-game (SA/GP) as opposed to 28.6 SA/GP. This means the current Nashville team is giving up much less, but didn't have Pekka Rinne in net in his Vezina Trophy winning season.

While neither power play is all that impressive, the current Predators have the 17/18 Predators beat by four goals on the man advantage through the 15 game streaks. The current Predators scored 10, then just added an 11th in the 16th game of the point streak. The 17/18 team only scored six power-play goals over the 15-game span.

Finally, as the current team has played better in their own end to shut teams down and limit scoring chances, they have also been much more disciplined, only recording 112 penalty minutes instead of 148 by the 17/18 Predators. There are some areas that are close, but you can't deny that what we are seeing from the 23/24 Predators is something special and no team will want to match up against them in the playoffs.
