Juuse Saros: Does The Extension Make Sense For Nashville?

The Predators found themselves in a serious pickle with Juuse Saros. He’s arguably one of the best goalies in the NHL. We have also learned that paying a premium for goalies in terms of actual dollars is often times a huge mistake .

At the end of the day, Nashville actually got an extension done here. Saros and the club have agreed to an eight year extension that will give him an AAV of $7.74 million. Does this deal actually make sense for the Preds? Did they make the right call here?

This is the good news. The price tag here is actually really reasonable. Saros clearly wanted to stay with the team because he probably could have gotten way more on the open market. Playing for a no state tax team certainly helps.

Still… compare this to some of the other price tags out there. Sergei Bobrovsky makes a $10 million AAV and that deal was signed in 2019. Ilya Sorokin is at $8.25 million. Connor Hellebuyck is at $8.5 million. This is a serious bargain contract when you really think about it.

This is the other good news part of this. Now that Saros is locked in, the Preds have a serious trade chip on their hands with Yaroslav Askarov. Nashville can move Askarov for a return that helps the blue line or forward group.

If you’re a Predators fan, it’s hard to complain about this deal. The AAV is reasonable for a guy who has a career .917 SV% in Nashville while playing for a team that’s never been a strong contender to win the Cup.
