    Nashville Predators spend big in free agency

    Nashville Predators general manager Barry Trotz stormed into free agency Monday, signing three accomplished veteran players to high-priced contracts.

    Why it matters: Trotz signaled to fans the Predators are committed to vying for a Stanley Cup this season.


    Zoom in: In the early hours of free agency, the Predators struck free-agent deals with forwards Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault and defenseman Brady Skjei. The three contracts total $108.5 million , according to multiple media reports.

    • Stamkos signed for four years with an average annual salary of $8 million. Marchessault signed for five years at $5.5 million per season.
    • Skjei signed the largest contract at seven years and $7 million per season.

    Between the lines: The newest Preds add experience and offensive firepower.

    The intrigue: Stamkos comes to Nashville after spending the first 16 years of his career with Tampa Bay.

    What he's saying: "It's still too early to process. Just wanted everyone to know how thankful we are for 16 years as a bolt," Stamkos said on X . "My family and I are excited for the next chapter."

    Also: In addition to the three high-profile signings, the Predators agreed to a two-year deal with goalie Scott Wedgewood to serve as the backup to Saros.
