Todd Gilliland holds no punches on Carson Hocevar: ‘I hate this kid, honestly, I hate him’

Carson Hocevar isn’t exactly the most popular guy in the NASCAR Cup Series garage right now.

Hocevar, penalized by NASCAR for intentionally spinning Harrison Burton under caution during this past Sunday’s Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway, also made an enemy out of Todd Gilliland while pulling off the stunt. Footage from Gilliland’s onboard camera was released Tuesday and showed Hocevar making contact with Gilliland under caution.

At the end of the video, just as Hocevar purposely spins Burton in front of Gilliland, the Front Row Motorsports driver says, “I hate this kid, honestly, I hate him.”

Hocevar, for all his talent, is clearly gaining a reputation and one he surely doesn’t want. His conduct at Nashville was unacceptable by NASCAR standards, and the sanctioning body made sure to act on it.

Hocevar was fined $50,000 and docked 25 driver points for violating the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct. The penalty drops Hocevar from 22nd to 24th in the standings, 181 points behind the playoff cutline. The incident occurred with 56 laps remaining in the final stage of the race, Hocevar was bothered by the way Burton had been racing him.

“He’s wrecked you under green, he’s wrecked you under caution” Burton was told on the radio.

Burton replied : “I’m f***ing over. I’m done with it. He just wrecked me under caution because I blocked him on the backstretch. He can kiss my ass.”

Burton later wrecked out of the race for good, finishing 28th. Hocevar, meanwhile, came out with a P16 finish. After the race, Burton described the situation from his perspective.

“I don’t know, he blocks everyone every week and I blocked him once and he decided to try and wreck me under yellow,” Burton said . “So, I don’t know. He’s on a lot of people’s lists as guys they don’t like racing. So, it kind of shows you why.”
