A 4-year-old girl is dead after she drowned in an Anitoch apartment complex's pool on the Fourth of July.

Metro Nashville Police and the Fire Department were called to the Magnolia Apartments in the 100 block of Arbor Knoll Boulevard at about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Police said the girl, identified as Mariam Jabateh, fell into the pool.

"Jabateh’s mother reported leaving her on the steps of the pool for a few seconds before people started yelling that she was drowning," police said in a statement Friday.

A young man jumped in and pulled the girl out. Someone at the pool called 911 and a dispatcher walked another person through CPR procedures.

When medics arrived, someone was still performing CPR on the girl, police said.

She was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, where she was pronounced dead.
