UT announces new ‘Volunteer State’ Smokey Grey uniforms

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — It’s almost football time in Tennessee once again, with the University of Tennessee releasing a preview of the Vols’ Smokey Grey uniforms that will be worn during a home game in the 2024 season.

UT announced the new uniforms on Saturday, saying “Three stars that define us. Three stars that unite us.” This year’s Smokey Grey uniforms are inspired by the timeless Tennessee Tri-Star emblem.

This is the second of at least three Smokey Grey uniforms from UT’s partnership with Nike that was announced in 2022. According to UT, that partnership promised a new Smoky Grey uniform design each season beginning in 2023 and continuing through at least 2025.

While this is the second iteration of the new Smokey Grey series, it is the first in time in the Smokey Grey series that “Tennessee” will be featured under a Power T on a home-game jersey, UT said. The Tri-Star logo is featured on the shoulder and pants of the uniform, and a white stripe from the Tennessee State flag is also used on the pants.

“The three white stars that comprise the logo represent the three grand divisions of Tennessee: West, Middle and East. The white circle bounds them together in one— an indissoluble trinity ,” University of Tennessee said.

The uniforms also feature a Smokey Grey helmet with the familiar orange Power T, a mountain design in shades of grey, paying tribute to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and a Smokey Grey face mask.

For those hoping to snag some Smokey Grey gear of their own, UT said the “Volunteer State” Smokey Grey merchandise will be rolling out later this month and in early August at shop.utsports.com and at local retailers.
