Tennessee Titans reportedly considering another free agent addition at safety before training camp

NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms last week with veteran safety Jamal Adams on a one-year contract . It's a low risk, high reward signing to add experienced depth at a position of need.

But even with the limited risk, the addition of Adams is polarizing. While technically a safety, Titans fans have been clamoring for a free safety with demonstrated ability in coverage and ballhawking skills. That's biggest thing missing from Tennessee's defense right now, and that's not what Adams is bringing to the table.

I expect Adams to be used as a dime linebacker on passing downs. He thrives as a blitzer from the safety spot as well. That doesn't solve the Titans' free safety issue...But another free agent addition might.

According to Paul Kuharsky at PaulKuharsky.com, the Titans have "been in contact with Justin Simmons" and "explored Quandre Diggs."

Simmons is a 30-year-old with 30 career interceptions in eight NFL seasons. He has played his entire NFL career with the Denver Broncos, but is now an unrestricted free agent looking for a new home. Simmons has been named to the All-Pro Second Team four different times during his career and selected to two Pro Bowls.

Diggs is going into his 10th career season and was selected to a Pro Bowl in three consecutive campaigns from 2020-2022. He is a former teammate of Jamal Adams with the Seattle Seahawks and has not a missed a single game in the last four seasons. That's right, Diggs has 67 games played since the start of 2020 and recorded an impressive 15 interceptions in that span.

Word on the street all offseason has been that Simmons' asking price in free agency was high. As Kuharsky wrote in his report, that is still the case. Tennessee has over $24 million in remaining cap space, but may not want to commit a large chunk of it to a veteran safety before they know what they have in Adams, Elijah Molden, and Amani Hooker.

Even though the Titans are looking into all of their options and considering another move at safety, I'd caution Titans fans to not put the cart before the horse. Simmons or Diggs coming to Music City is definitely possible, but still unlikely...at least before training camp begins, that is.

If a deal does get done, however, I don't think anyone would be complaining. Unlike Adams, either Simmons or Diggs would provide an immediately reliable upgrade over the current options on Tennessee's roster.
