    • The newspaper was recognized for its coverage of sports, breaking news, business and investigations.

The Tennessean on Friday secured the Tennessee Press Association Newspaper Contest General Excellence award, along with first place awards in 13 other categories, for its work ranging from sports, breaking news, business and investigative reporting during 2023.

Winning coverage included the newspaper's reporting on the Covenant School shooting, the expulsion of two representatives from the Tennessee General Assembly, deadly December tornadoes and an investigation about the Department of Children's Services. The newspaper collected 19 first, second or third place awards in total.

The annual awards, cosponsored by the University of Tennessee System, recognize the most outstanding journalism produced by newspapers of all sizes across the state. This year's awards judged 1,060 entries from 71 of the TPA's 131 member newspapers.

“These awards reflect The Tennessean’s commitment to bringing local news that matters to Nashville every single day,” said News Director Ben Goad. “I couldn’t be more proud of the hard-working journalists on our team.”

The 2024 awards marked the third year in a row The Tennessean was awarded the prize for General Excellence. It was also the sixth straight year the paper took the top prize for public service journalism in its division.

The Tennessean was also awarded nine Green Eyeshade Awards, announced earlier this month, including first place prizes for sports commentary, sports photography and newspaper graphics. The awards recognize the best journalism in the Southeastern U.S., including print, digital, television and radio reporting.

Journalists in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia may enter the annual contest.
