NASHVILLE, TN -- The Tennessee Titans made a surprise move by parting ways with high profile undrafted free agent rookie running back Dillon Johnson on Thursday, a source tells A to Z Sports. He was considered by many in the media to be a dark horse candidate for the Titans as their third running back prior to being cut .

The team had just signed outside linebacker Shane Ray and center Corey Levin to the team on Thursday as well, so it makes sense that general manager Ran Carthon likely had to shed a player or two in the process.

Dillon Johnson was a pivotal part of the Washington Huskies' run to the College Football National Championship game last season as he racked up nearly 1400 yards from scrimmage. Johnson forced over 40 missed tackles last year, racking up almost half of his yards after contact, leading many to believe he could have significant NFL potential.

At just shy of 220 pounds, Johnson plays with great balance and strength. However, he isn't the fastest running back out there, as demonstrated by his disappointing 4.68-second forty-yard dash time at the NFL Combine this spring. Johnson's receiving ability (173 career receptions in college) was thought to be what was going to set him apart in training camp for the Titans, but it wasn't enough to keep him on the team.

The Titans still have Tony Pollard, Tyjae Spears, Hassan Haskins, Jabari Small (UDFA rookie), and Julius Chestnut on the roster at running back. As confirmed by head coach Brian Callahan, both Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears will see significant work with the first team through out training camp and the season. The battle for the third running back spot on the Titans will continue between Small, Haskins, and Chestnut as practices progress into August.
