Meg McRee has been on a tear with the covers lately, and trust me, you don't want to miss out on it. An up and coming artist out of Nashville who needs to be on your radar, McRee has gained a reputation as one of the scene's most underrated songwriters. Well respected by her peers, McRee's songwriting chops have earned her the opportunity to collaborate with some of Nashville's best, and with how good her original music is, it's just a matter of time until larger audiences begin to take note. But in addition to her growing catalog of amazing original music, McRee seems to have awesome taste in music, and it shows in some of the covers she's been posting on YouTube and social media lately. The most recent one was this cover of "Texas Sun," that you absolutely do not want to miss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCPi20DrDaQ "Texas Sun" was originally released in February 2020 on the
Texas Sun EP, a four track collaborative project between two Lone Star state acts - Fort Worth soul singer Leon Bridges and Khruangbin, a funk and jam trio from Houston. Proving wildly popular, with nearly 260 million streams thus far on Spotify alone, "Texas Sun" clearly struck a chord with most everyone who has listened, in large part due to Bridge's soulful delivery and Khruangbin's sonically adventurous instrumentation. Check out the original here if you haven't heard it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whe7MURlKLw Despite its popularity, though, "Texas Sun" doesn't seem to be a frequently covered tune, which make's McRee's rendition all the more impressive. But that isn't all she has up her sleeve. In fact, McRee has posted quite a few covers on social media and YouTube recently that I highly recommend checking out. Here are a couple more of my favorites she's done.
"Sister Golden Hair" - America https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QgOlSSgIYY "Call Me the Breeze" - JJ Cale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG1aBqFKNtI For anyone who may not be familiar, McRee hails from Sugar Hill, GA, a small town north of Atlanta, but attended college at Vanderbilt University and has been in Nashville ever since. She released her debut single “A Lot To Say” in 2022 before ultimately dropping an extremely impressive debut record with Is It Just Me? in 2023. These covers are awesome, but the real thing's even better, so make sure to check out her original music, too. Here's her most recent release, and perhaps my favorite of hers to date, "Usually You." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb0t06g0C9s
