Gretchen Walsh eighth in Olympics swimming 100 free at Paris 2024 Summer Games

Nashville's Gretchen Walsh made her third finals appearance Wednesday at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, this time in the 100-meter freestyle. She finished the race eighth in the event after being the last to qualify out of the semifinals..

Walsh, a Harpeth Hall graduate, has won two silver medals during her first Olympic Games. She has yet to swim the 50 freestyle.

Walsh finished the 100 freestyle in 53.04. Sweeden's Sarah Sjoestroem was first in 52.16. Walsh's teammate Torri Huske was second in 52.29.

Walsh was part of the U.S. women's second-place 400-meter relay team along with Kate Douglass, Huske and Simone Manuel. Their time of 3:30.20 seconds set a U.S. record. Walsh swam the second leg in 52.55.

She also was runner-up in the 100-meter butterfly — a race in which she owns the world and Olympic records -- by four-hundredths of a second to Huske, who won in 55.59 seconds.

Walsh also will compete in her fourth and final event, the 50-meter freestyle, on Saturday.

"It's really, really cool," Walsh told NBC of winning her first individual medal. "I feel like this crowd has been amazing. I'm just happy we're both going to be 1-2, USA, on the podium."

The 21-year-old Walsh has been an All-American 21 times at Virginia, where she has won 18 NCAA titles and three national team titles in three years.

Walsh's older sister, Alex, will compete in the 200-meter individual medley Friday. She won a silver medal in the event during the Tokyo Games in 2021 in 2:08.65.

Alex earned 19 NCAA championships and was an All-American 27 times during four national title-winning seasons at Virginia.
