UT Swimmer Espernberger Breaks Austrian National Record in 200 Fly

PARIS – Martin Espernberger broke the Austrian national record in the 200 fly to lead Tennessee swimming during day five of the Olympics.

Competing in the event final, Espernberger finished sixth overall and shaved half a second off his personal best time in the 200 fly, clocking a 1:54.17 effort to shatter the Austrian record. Espernberger, who won a bronze medal in the event at the World Championships in February, concluded his first career appearance at the Olympic with today’s event.

Also competing on the day, Mona McSharry represented Ireland in the 200 breast, advancing to the semifinals, where she finished 11th overall with a mark of 2:24.48. Earlier in the week, she became just the second Irish swimmer ever to win an Olympic medal, taking bronze in the 100 breast. McSharry will return to the pool later in the week for the 4×100 medley relay.

Four swimmers will compete in prelims Thursday morning. Regan Rathwell of Canada will make her Olympic debut in the 200 back. The All-American duo of Gui Caribe and Jordan Crooks return to the pool for the 50 free. Julia Mrozinski rounds things out as a member of the 4×200 free relay for Germany.
