Before the pandemic there were a lot more businesses open in East Rogers Park. This increased the sense of community in the area as people would meet and greet each other, as they wandered through local shops, or indulged in great food and drink in local establishments. During and after the pandemic however, many businesses ran out of money and had to close their doors, including Leonas's Italian Restaurant, a popular family oriented establishment (while there have been several plans for the space none have materialized yet.

Other businesses were not able to fully bounce back after the pandemic and other favorite locations, such as The New 400 Cinema, the oldest movie theater in Chicago, subsequently, had to shut down.

In some cases other businesses took over, but there were still a number of boarded up spaces that hadn't rebounded as of yet and you don't find the same size local crowds walking around the neighborhood year around like you used to.

Now, neighborhood residents have something to look forward to however, with the opening of a new independent bookstore in Jarvis Square called, appropriately enough, Jarvis Square Books. It will be located at 1522 West Jarvis Ave. next to Lakeside Treasures.

They are currently ramping up for the opening which will be held sometime this fall depending on how quickly they can get stocked. The proprieters invite locals to stop by and take a look, especially if they have books they'd like to give to the store. While they won't pay you for your books, they will provide store credit which will never expire which you can use to buy new or used books in their store. To make an appointment to drop off your books and get a first look at the store, you can email used@jarvissquarebooks.com.

You can find a list of the types of books they will accept and those they won't here. They look forward to meeting local residents and becoming a part of the East Rogers Park community.
