CHICAGO — A Chicago man has been formally charged in connection with a fatal wrong-way crash that occurred nearly a year ago on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. The crash, which claimed the life of a 29-year-old man, took place last October near the I-55 exit ramp.

Leotis Carter, 54, has been charged with three felonies, including aggravated driving under the influence (DUI) and reckless homicide. According to the Chicago Police Department, Carter was allegedly driving under the influence when he entered the northbound lanes of DuSable Lake Shore Drive heading south. The collision occurred at 11:48 p.m. on the 2900 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Carter’s vehicle collided head-on with another car, resulting in fatal injuries to a passenger in the second vehicle. The 29-year-old victim, who sustained blunt force trauma, was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Carter, who also sustained serious injuries in the crash, was initially cited at the scene and taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was taken into custody at the time of the accident and now faces formal charges. A detention hearing is scheduled for Saturday.

The reason for the delay in bringing charges against Carter, as well as his whereabouts over the past year, have not been disclosed by authorities.

So Carter must have done a U-Turn head on into the North bound only traffic when he reached the end of the ramp! Lakeshore Drive is completely divided into 2 separate roadways there. With both walls and separated by about 20 feet.
