BELLEVILLE, IL – Health officials are investigating a Shigellosis outbreak linked to a Longhorn Steakhouse in St. Clair County after 14 individuals tested positive for the illness, which is caused by the Shigella bacteria.

The St. Clair County Health Department has confirmed that the majority of those infected had dined at the Longhorn Steakhouse located at 6115 North Illinois Street in Fairview Heights between September 21 and 22. Of the 14 cases, six people have required hospitalization due to the severity of their symptoms.

Shigellosis, a gastrointestinal infection, is typically spread through contaminated food or improper handwashing practices. Symptoms can include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever.

Health officials are urging anyone who visited the Fairview Heights Longhorn Steakhouse between September 21 and the present and has since experienced gastrointestinal symptoms to seek medical attention.

The St. Clair County Health Department is collaborating with the Illinois Department of Public Health to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. As investigations continue, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.
