HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Residents in the northwest suburbs of Hoffman Estates are on high alert after reports surfaced of a wild cat roaming the area. Local authorities have confirmed that the animal is a caracal, a species not native to the U.S. and protected due to its endangered status.

Hoffman Estates police took to social media on Monday to inform the community of the sighting, stating that the large feline was spotted near Della Drive and the Hilldale Golf Course. "The cat has been identified as a caracal," police said in a statement. "This cat is a native species to Asia and not common to the United States."

Officials are currently working with both local and federal agencies to safely capture and remove the animal. However, as of 4:50 p.m., the caracal's location remained unknown.

Caracals are wild cats and while not the largest, they are far from small. They can reach 3.5 feet long and about 2.5 feet in height at the shoulder. They weigh around 40 pounds. Caracals are extremely fast and can reach speeds of 50mph.

Caracals will attack anything they deem to be dangerous or a threat, including humans. They have sharp fangs that are designed to rip, shred and kill, and retractable claws that they use to slash at potential threats.

Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and avoid approaching the wild cat. Anyone with information on the animal’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact Hoffman Estates police or call 911 immediately.
