CHICAGO – A 22-year-old woman passed away Tuesday afternoon despite rescue efforts after she was pulled from the Chicago River at the Riverwalk Park.

According to reports from the Chicago Tribune, the incident began around 2:30 p.m. when the woman was observed lowering herself into the river, prompting an immediate response from Chicago Fire Department medics.

Approximately 100 onlookers witnessed the rescue operation near Dearborn Street and West Wacker Drive as the Chicago Fire Department retrieved the woman from the river. Paramedics performed chest compressions and the woman was then transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Despite the rapid response and attempts to revive her, the woman ultimately succumbed to her condition and was pronounced dead shortly before 3:30 p.m. as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities have withheld the woman's identity as investigations continue. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday to determine the cause of death.

The Chicago Police Department's Area Three detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman's death. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, officials are examining all aspects of the case to understand what led to this tragic event.
