CHICAGO — As the Democratic National Convention approaches, the city's Deputy Mayor of Immigrant, Migrant, and Refugee Rights clarified the current situation regarding the arrival of migrants from the southern border. During an interview on WGN Radio's The Lisa Dent Show, Beatriz Ponce de Leon announced that officials are not anticipating large groups of migrants being sent to Chicago before the convention.

"We are not expecting 25,000 migrants or any other large influx of migrants. The governor has certainly threatened to do that, and to send people here. There's lots of speculation and concern about it," Ponce de Leon remarked, referencing statements made by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Governor Abbott, addressing attendees at the Republican National Convention, reiterated his commitment to continue bussing migrants who cross the southern border to other cities "until we finally secure our border."

Ponce de Leon dismissed Abbott’s remarks as a "political stunt." She emphasized that while preparations were previously made for a potential influx, current expectations do not foresee the arrival of such a large number of migrants.

During a recent meeting of the city council’s Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Ponce de Leon had mentioned preparations for an influx that could reach up to 25,000 migrants. However, these plans now seem unnecessary based on the latest assessments.

Since August 2022, Chicago has received 45,881 migrants transported by nearly 950 buses. On Monday, the city reported that 5,567 individuals were residing in 17 active shelters managed by city and state authorities. These numbers highlight Chicago's ongoing efforts to support incoming migrants while managing resources and infrastructure effectively.

The Democratic National Convention is set to commence on August 19, with city officials continuing to monitor the situation closely. The convention is expected to draw significant attention, and the city's readiness to address migrant concerns remains a focal point in the lead-up to the event.
