CHICAGO, IL – As the city of Chicago readies itself to host the Democratic National Convention (DNC) from August 19-22, a brazen theft at a luxury retailer has sparked concerns about security. Early Saturday morning, a group of thieves shattered the front glass door of the high-end Prada store, escalating fears as the city anticipates an influx of approximately 50,000 visitors.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the theft occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time when a group of three to four individuals forced their way into the store, damaging the display window and cases. The perpetrators quickly fled the scene in a white SUV. Authorities are actively searching for the suspects but have yet to make any arrests.

This incident adds to a growing trend of organized retail thefts in Chicago, which has seen an uptick in various crimes, including robberies and motor vehicle theft, even as overall murders have declined since 2020. The Prada store heist comes just weeks before the city is set to host the DNC, an event expected to draw tens of thousands of participants and significant national attention.

The timing of the theft has heightened concerns about the city's ability to maintain security during the convention. In response to the anticipated surge in visitors, local authorities have been enhancing security measures around the United Center, where the convention will take place. Upgrades to streets and walkways are being made to create a secure perimeter, isolating the convention area from the general public. Additionally, strict protocols, including vehicle checks, are being imposed on residents and workers within the secure zone.

Chicago Alderman Anthony Napolitano expressed his concerns during an appearance on "Fox & Friends First," where he discussed the city's ongoing struggles with crime and the migrant crisis as it braces for an additional 25,000 arrivals before the DNC. Napolitano emphasized that the city is facing significant challenges, particularly as it prepares to take center stage during the convention.
